Fish and Wildlife Technician 1 (Seasonal) Engineering - Rochester, NY at Geebo

Fish and Wildlife Technician 1 (Seasonal)

Seasonal Fish and Wildlife Technician 1 position based in Braddock Bay, Monroe County to work on the Lake Ontario Creel (Fishing Boat and Tributary Surveys) monitoring angler success/effort and performance of stocked trout and salmon. The boat survey will run from mid-April until mid-September each year, while the tributary survey covers mid-September through mid-April. The survey designs are different with the boat survey requiring the technicians to work both weekend days and all holidays, and half the weekdays. Technicians work in 2-week blocks of AM or PM shifts (which vary with day length) averaging 40 hours per week. The tributary survey covers both weekend days and all holidays (except Christmas) plus three randomly selected weekdays (5 days per week = 40 hours) with AM or PM shifts. The survey will consist of anchoring a boat at marinas and interviewing returning fishing boats, or driving a specified route covering multiple streams each day while performing counts and conducting interviews. Technicians must effectively interact and communicate with the public, ask questions regarding their angling experience, and accurately record angler answers and biological data. Processing fish for length, weight, clip and scale samples is required as well as data entry. Must be able to safely trailer, operate, and work on board an 18'boat. Computer skills a plus. Technicians are required to work some overtime during the boat survey and in a variety of inclement weather conditions on both projects. Must work effectively both independently and as a team member. Prior to the start of the survey, overnight travel will be required to clip fish in a hatchery setting. Other duties will include, but not limited to preparing gear and equipment, data entry and other computer training prior, various Fisheries Technician duties.
