As a Security Hospital Treatment Assistant, in a secure forensic unit or hospital, you would provide assistance with psychiatric treatment and rehabilitation. You will also be responsible for the safety and security of individuals diagnosed with mental illness who are considered to be dangerous to themselves and/or others. You would model acceptable behaviors and verbal skills, teach replacement behaviors and implement treatment goals through positive therapeutic interactions with patients. You would lead or co-lead therapeutic activity groups, escort patients off grounds to appointments, provide 1:
1 patient supervision, complete reports and documentation, constantly monitor patients and provide for a safe and therapeutic environment. You will use verbal techniques to deescalate situations and will use approved physical intervention techniques as a last resort to ensure the safety of patients and others. You would also assist in the application of restraint or seclusion. You would assist with personal hygiene such as monitoring of vital signs, use of first aid, and CPR.

Salary Range:
From $55057 to $67369 Annually
Minimum Qualification
Candidates must be reachable for appointment from one of the appropriate Civil Service eligible lists for this title; OR Transfer Opportunity - Candidates must have one year of permanent service as a Security Hospital Treatment Assistant or in a title deemed appropriate for transfer via Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law within two salary grades of the Grade 14 level; Provisional Opportunity:
Employees of the New York State Office of Mental Health who have had one year of permanent competitive or non-competitive service in a direct care position allocated to a Grade 9 or higher AND also have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as a GED) may be appointed provisionally. Either 1. a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma (such as a GED), AND one year of direct patient care experience providing treatment to individuals in secure institutions who have been diagnosed with mental illness or with emotional or social behavior problems; Or 2. a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as a GED), AND two years of direct patient care experience where the primary duties included treatment for emotional or social behavior problems; Or 3. an associate's degree or 60 college credits, AND one year of direct patient care experience where the primary duties included treatment for emotional or social behavior problems; Or 4. a bachelor's degree or 120 college credits. Candidates appointed provisionally must take the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title, and their score must be reachable on the resulting eligible list before they can be permanently appointed. Candidates who do not pass the examination or achieve a reachable score may not be retained. Notes:
Physical/Medical Requirements:
