Band Teacher
Summary:
Responsible for teaching weekly 4th, 5th, and 6th grade small and whole group band lessons.
Teachers who are not certified will meet one or more of the criteria listed in section 2854(3) (a- 1) of Education Law.
Reports To:
Director of Arts and Technology
Qualifications:
Music Education and/or Instrumental Degree Valid New York State Teaching Certificate in Music Education and/or NCLB highly qualified status preferred but not required Previous teaching experience in a public or private school, preferably in an urban setting or experience working with groups of children and youth within music education preferred.
Specific Duties:
Responsibilities are representative but may not capture all tasks to be performed.
The candidates will be expected to complete all duties which may be required in the performance of their position.
Develop and carry out the RA band curriculum for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students.
Create and adjust each trimester's band schedule as necessary and communicate with all stakeholders.
Provide weekly small group band lessons in Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, and Percussion.
Ensure that the band curriculum is aligned to the NYS Music Standards.
Cooperate with the general music teacher to ensure skills learned in general music will transfer into band.
Ex.
If the general music teacher teaches Ta and Ti-Ti, the band director should teach the same in lessons.
Work one-on-one with 6th grade students auditioning for School of the Arts.
Rehearse students for, and participate in, multiple school performances (i.
e.
Holiday Concert, Black History Month Celebration, Spring Concert).
Co-teach with the general music teacher when necessary.
Maintain an orderly instrument inventory and manage tuning and repair needs.
Oversee instrument borrowing program.
Develop a 1st-3rd grade instrumental enrichment program.
General Expectations:
Differentiate instruction for students as needed.
Uses Whole Brain Teaching and generally engages in effective and appropriate classroom management.
Use effective presentation skills when employing direct instruction, including appropriate vocabulary and examples, clear and legible visuals, and articulate and audible speech.
Provide an inviting, exciting, innovative, learning environment.
Maintain safe, clean, attractive and orderly work and storage spaces.
Maintain and enrich expertise in music education.
Assist with the preparation, monitoring, and following of Individualized Education Plans for selected students.
Understand, practice and be accountable for professional expectations as defined by the 4 domains of Charlotte Danielson.
Demonstrate the capacity to work collaboratively across disciplines.
