Duties include, but are not limited to:
Assisting the Chief of Sterile Processing Services in oversight of all operational and administrative activities of the service. Providing technical and direct supervision through subordinate supervisors, and managing staffing needs. Ensuring that reusable medical equipment (RME) is cleaned, processed and packaged as appropriate for use by clinical personnel throughout all clinical and patient care areas of the Medical Center. Working cooperatively with Surgical Service to establish shared goals that make for a successful Surgery Case Cart System and other delivery systems used within the Medical Center. This requires development of a critical scheduling system by continually anticipating and responding to the surgical schedule of the Medical Center. Responsible for the quality management system activities within the Sterile Processing Service, to include training, competency assessment, development and enforcement of standard operating procedures. Responsible for continuous quality improvement projects that result in improved services to all customers. Issuing, adapting, implementing and maintaining local SPS policies and procedures as applicable to specific facility/system programs. Implementing Federal and agency program for return or reutilization of equipment. Responsible for ensuring all functionality checks are conducted on sterilization equipment and records of the testing are maintained in accordance with The Joint Commission and official Medical Center policy. Soliciting assistance from, or responding to, inquiries from outside regulatory and advisory agencies to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures from organizations such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), Joint Commission (JC), International Association for Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM), Association of Perioperative Nurses (AORN), and others. In conjunction with the Chief, SPS, the Assistant Chief is responsible for developing policies and procedures that meet the infection prevention standards set by JC, AAMI, AORN, IAHCSMM, and for monitoring compliance with those policies to meet established local, VISN, VHA and JC requirements for safe patient care. Assistant Chief is under the supervision of the Chief, Sterile Processing Service. Supervisor provides guidance concerning strategic program requirements, objectives and interpretation but incumbent works primarily independently and refers only problems with difficulty to the supervisor for discussion and advice. The Assistant Chief proceeds with supervisory guidance and shows self-initiative in accomplishing assigned duties within timeframes usually dictated by controlled due dates, urgency of the matter, or by the supervisor. Exhibits self-initiative in starting and completing projects. Keeps supervisor informed of potential issues or problems with widespread impact. Per VHA Directive 1116(2), chapter 7a and d, all new Medical Supply Technicians must complete Level I Training within 90 days of hire. Additionally, all Medical Supply Technicians must participate in continuing education such as, computer-based training, or in-service education sessions leading to 12 education hours annually. Meeting the needs of customers while supporting the Medical Center, Service and national VA priorities. Consistently communicating and treating customers (patients, visitors, volunteers, and all Medical Center staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Adhering to all facility required computer security policies and procedures. Incumbent protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, Federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHA policy. Protects the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion. United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Certification. None required. Foreign Education. To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education must have been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U. S. programs. Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. English Language Proficiency. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005 chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j. Grandfathering Provision. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements required in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it, the following provisions apply:
(1) Employees grandfathered into the GS-622 occupational series as MSTs may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance (journeyman) level, or changed to lower grade within the occupation. (2) MSTs who are appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed, on a temporary or permanent basis until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard. (3) MSTs who are converted to title 38 hybrid status under this provision and subsequently leave the occupation lose protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of reentry to the occupation. overseeing a work team that includes at least one MST position that is above the full performance; distributing and prioritizing workload among employees in accordance with established workflow and/or job specializations; assuring an even distribution of the workload; revising work schedules to meet anticipated and unanticipated changes in the workload; assigning tasks as necessary to provide new employees with the experience and training required to perform decontamination of scopes and instrumentation in the work area; monitoring and reporting on the status of work; ensuring SOPs and SPS mandates are followed during the performance of workflow; reviewing or spot checking scope processing work to ensure completed work meets supervisors' instructions (e.g., work sequences, procedures, methods, and deadlines); assessing the quality and quantity of work by reviewing the cleaning, reprocessing, and distribution of scope medical equipment, material and instrumentation; providing information to management officials concerning performance issues, assignment changes and task completion; instructing employees on work-related activities, policies, procedures and goals. This work is performed in various settings:
decontamination, preparation, clean sterile supply (preparation), gastrointestinal intestinal endoscope reprocessing hub, and in other services and departments throughout the medical facility/campus. The incumbent may be required to work in areas that are hot, cold, drafty and poorly lighted. The work requires proper body mechanics when standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages/instrument trays (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds). The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating, disassembly and assembly of instrumentation. On a regular and recurring basis, the employee alternates between a contaminated environment and a carefully controlled clean environment. The employee wears special clothing, hair covers, personal protective equipment and shoe covers that can be uncomfortably warm. The employee uses insulated gloves to remove carts from sterilizers. The employee is subject to burns from accidentally touching hot items. The hazards of working around minute quantities of sterilizing gasses are unknown. The employee often works around body fluids, mucous, excretions and bits of tissue, some of which may be foul smelling. Strong, unpleasant odors are encountered while decontaminating bloody or grossly contaminated instrumentation or reusable medical equipment. The work area is noisy due to the clatter of metal instruments, rumbling of carts and operation of pre-sterilizing equipment.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
